It is true that you can paint your outdoor exterior in any shade, color or design you want. But you do have some considerations to think of before you finally settle down to buying your first can of paint. First of all, what kind of surface are you going to paint? Since your exterior wall is exposed to all the elements, certain surfaces react differently to the constant battering of the weather. Stone walls are not much of a problem because they are non porous and do not absorb water. Wood however, has to be of a specific type to withstand constant rain and shine. Metal exteriors tend to corrode in time. So the type of exterior paint that you would use on these surfaces should be compatible and serve as an outer protection to make your exteriors last longer.

If you are not a paint expert it would be best to ask for the advice of a professional painter on the kind of paint that you should use on your exteriors. Aside from applying the basic primer, there are also various methods of applying paint on particular kinds of surfaces before you put on the final coat of paint.
